Building an online creative business is hard work. If you’re working from home, staying in your pajamas and responding to emails from bed may seem like the best way to spend your Saturday morning. This work strategy might even work for a day or two. After the first week, I can assure you that working from the comfort of your own bed is the absolute worst way to get your work done. There are too many temptations around including (but not limited to) playing with your pets, reorganizing your books by color, and washing your sheets for the second time that week. To get your creative business off the ground, you’ll have to get out of the house and head to a unique place to do the foundational work you need to get done. The only question is, where should you go to do it? To all you wanderlustin’ ladies out there who cannot focus and get SHIT DONE in the convenience of your own home… this article is for you. I’m totally GUILTY of not being able to work at home because I’m used to always being on the move. When you’re a traveler like me, staying home and being productive never seems to work out. There’s always something new out there to be experienced and there’s always inspiration to be found, so why be surrounded by the same 4 walls of your office when people are literally hiring you for your creative vision If you find working in the same environment day in and day out tedious, you’re in good company. In order for you to be more productive, you need to get out into the world to work. Luckily, I know how to do just that.
During the weekend, coffee shops are the absolute best place to get your work done. If you find that you’re not the kind of person that wants to be a regular at the starbucks down the street, try going to different coffee shops each weekend so you don’t get bored of the same ol’ ones! You’ll also want to try get to your coffee shop early (like when they first open) because the best seats tend to fill up quick. If you don’t want to left out without a table that has an outlet for you to charge your laptop, get there early and get all of your work knocked out by noon. If you get your work out of the way early in the day, you’ll also have the rest of the evening to do whatever you’d like! Bonus tip: If you want to have a super productive work day, you gotta fuel up (and not just on caffeine). Going to a coffee shop that has yummy breakfast sandwiches is a must!
If you want an extra quiet space that doesn’t include the din of coffee makers, acoustic covers, and conversations, I recommend hotel hopping instead of going to a coffee shop. Hotel spaces tend to have comfy seating and they have food options in case you plan on staying a while. Some hotels may not have wifi for you unless you’re a hotel guest, so you’ll want to do your research ahead of time and make sure you’re not caught in a space where you can’t actually do your work. Once you find a few hotels near you that don’t mind outside visitors, hotel hopping is a great change of pace.
No matter where in the world you are, there is a co-working space near you filled with people needing to get their work done. All you have to do to check one out is to ask for a temporary workspace entrance pass to a place like WeWork or any other similar workspace that is native to the region you’re in. If you want to experience the digital nomad lifestyle, you can try to find co-working spaces where you can pay a cheap monthly fee to get access to wifi, a desk, and coffee (perhaps in Playa del Carmen or Bali). Co-working spaces are my fav kind of places to get SHIT DONE simply because you’re constantly motivated because you’re surrounded by like-minded people also needing to get their shit done, as well. Not to mention, when you work from co-working spaces around the world, you build a huge range of networking connections. These connections are vital to building your online biz. Co-working knocks out two birds with one stone, so get your networking and business building done all at once!
The beach? You got it. You may think that going to the beach and sitting under an umbrella with your toes in the sand may be distracting, but if you’re not in a touristy area with dozens of people, the beach is a relaxing place to get your work done. The waves of the ocean crashing on the shore is one background noise that can calm and inspire anyone. As long as you have access to wifi from a hotel, Airbnb, or bar nearby, you’re on your way to working on the beach. There are even portable wifi hotspots that you can purchase or rent just in case the place you’re staying doesn’t have internet access. This way, you’ll be connected no matter what. When it comes to building an online creative business, being creative is the most important asset you have. In order to boost your creativity and get your work done, you need to find a place that inspires you to just do it! Where do you get most of your business building work done?
